I used to trust my camera's meter completely. Spot meter said 0, I shot at 0. Evaluative said 0, same thing. Every snowy scene came out grey. Every backlit portrait turned into a silhouette. It took me way too long to figure out the meter is not your friend — it's a suggestion, and a mediocre one at that.
The Meter Averages Everything to 18% Grey
This is the fundamental problem. Your light meter doesn't know what you're photographing. It doesn't see snow, sand, or a white cat. It sees brightness levels and tries to make everything look like 18% grey — that middle tone that photographers love to talk about.
So when you point your camera at a snow-covered street in Punta del Este in January, the meter says "too bright, let me fix that" and underexposes everything by a stop or two. Your white snow becomes grey slush. Your white clouds become grey mush. The camera is wrong and it's wrong with confidence.
When to Add Exposure Compensation ( +EV )
Bright scenes need positive compensation. Period. Here is my mental checklist:
+1 to +2 EV: Snow, white sand, bright overcast sky dominating the frame
+0.5 to +1 EV: Light-coloured subjects on light backgrounds, white buildings against sky
+0.3 to +0.7 EV: Portraits in open shade ( the meter tends to underexpose skin slightly )
When to Subtract Exposure Compensation ( -EV )
Dark scenes need negative compensation. The meter sees a dark room and says "I need to brighten this up" — but you want it dark. Night shots, dark interiors, black animals, dramatic shadows. All need you to dial it down.
-1 to -2 EV: Night scenes, dark rooms, silhouettes against bright skies
-0.5 to -1 EV: Dark subjects on dark backgrounds, deep green forests, stormy skies
-0.3 to -0.7 EV: Sunsets and sunrises where you want colour saturation, not detail in the shadows
The One Rule That Actually Works
If the overall scene is brighter than average, add compensation. If it's darker than average, subtract. That's it. That's the whole trick. The meter assumes average — so when your scene isn't average, you need to tell it.
I shoot aperture priority 90% of the time. Exposure compensation is the dial I touch more than any other. Not ISO, not shutter speed — that little +/- button. Because the meter will always be wrong in the situations that matter most.
Spot Metering Changes the Game
If you're still on evaluative or matrix metering, switch to spot. Right now. I'll wait.
Spot metering reads one specific point. You decide what that point is — usually the most important part of your frame. A face. A highlight. A shadow you want detail in. Then you set exposure for that one thing and let the rest fall where it may.
This is how I shoot street photography. I meter off a face, set exposure, recompose, shoot. The background might be blown out or crushed to black — and that's fine. The subject is correctly exposed, and that's what matters.
What About the Histogram?
The histogram is useful but overrated as a real-time tool. By the time you check it, the moment is gone. I use it for landscape work where I have time, not for street or documentary. For fast shooting, learn to read the meter and trust your compensation. The histogram is a post-shot confirmation, not a shooting tool.
The one thing the histogram is genuinely good for: checking if you've clipped highlights. On digital, you can recover shadows but blown highlights are gone forever. Expose for the highlights, recover the shadows in post. That's ETTR ( expose to the right ) and it works, but only if you're shooting RAW.
The Compensation Dial Is Your Best Friend
Stop fighting your camera. Use exposure compensation and suddenly aperture priority becomes the most powerful mode you have. Meter says 0, you say +1.3 because you know the snow is brighter than the meter thinks. Done. No chimping, no second-guessing.
My default starting points:
Overcast day: +0.7 EV
Beach or snow: +1.5 to +2 EV
Night city: -1 to -1.5 EV
Open shade portrait: +0.5 EV
Backlit subject: +1 to +2 EV ( depending on how much you want the background to blow )
These aren't rules. They're starting points. Adjust from there. But having a baseline means you're 80% of the way there before you even press the shutter.
Conclusion
The camera's meter is a tool, not an oracle. It gets confused by bright scenes, dark scenes, and high-contrast scenes — which happen to be the scenes that make the best photographs. Learn exposure compensation, use spot metering, and stop trusting the 0 on your meter like it's gospel.
