I spent three months researching monitors before buying one. Read forums, watched YouTube comparisons, made spreadsheets. Then I plugged it in and realized none of that mattered.
The monitor you have right now is probably fine. Here is why I think most people waste time and money on the wrong things.
What Actually Matters
Three things. Panel type, resolution relative to screen size, and one good cable. That is it. Everything else ( HDR, built-in speakers, USB hubs, fancy stands ) is noise.
Panel Type: Pick IPS and Move On
VA panels have better contrast. OLED looks incredible. And for 90% of us, IPS is the right choice. Color accuracy is good enough, viewing angles are fine, and you do not get the smearing VA panels are known for.
I tried a VA panel for two weeks. Dark scenes looked great but scrolling through code was a ghosting mess. Swapped it for a basic IPS and immediately stopped caring about contrast ratios.
OLED is the future. It is not the present. Burn-in is real if you keep static UI elements on screen for hours, and I definitely do. My IDE has the same sidebar visible for 8+ hours a day. OLED is for people who watch movies and play games, not for developers who stare at terminal windows.
Resolution vs Screen Size
This is the only math that matters.
- 24 inch: 1080p is fine. 1440p is better but not required.
- 27 inch: 1440p or do not bother. 1080p at 27 is a pixel party you will regret.
- 32 inch: 4K or nothing. 1440p at 32 looks like someone smeared Vaseline on the screen.
- Ultrawide 34 inch: 3440x1440. Same pixel density as 27 inch 1440p. Clean.
I went 27 inch 1440p and it is the sweet spot. Anything bigger on my desk and I am turning my head like I am watching tennis.
Refresh Rate: 60Hz Is Fine, Seriously
I know. The internet says 144Hz changes your life. It does not. It changes your gaming. For work, for coding, for reading documentation, 60Hz is perfectly fine.
I have used both. The difference is noticeable when you drag windows around. That is the use case people are passionate about. Dragging windows.
If you play fast-paced games, get 144Hz. If you work and occasionally game, 60-75Hz saves you money and you will not think about it after day two.
Cables: Just Use DisplayPort
HDMI works but DisplayPort is the correct answer for a desktop monitor. It handles higher refresh rates at higher resolutions without drama. It locks into the port. It does not negotiate with your TV.
USB-C is fine if your monitor is also a dock. But if you are just connecting a monitor, DisplayPort is the one that never gives you mystery black screens or resolution drops.
The Setup I Actually Use
Here is what sits on my desk right now.
- LG 27GP850-B ( 27 inch, 1440p, IPS, 165Hz ) — bought refurbished, paid 280 USD
- Dell U2415 ( 24 inch, 1080p, IPS ) — the second monitor, vertical, for chat and terminals
- DisplayPort for the LG, HDMI for the Dell
- A VESA arm from Amazon that cost 25 USD and is the best money I ever spent
The Dell is 8 years old. It still works perfectly. I refuse to replace it because there is nothing wrong with it.
What I Would Do Differently
If I were starting from zero today, I would buy one good 27 inch 1440p IPS monitor and a cheap VESA arm. That is the entire setup. No dual monitor fantasies, no ultrawide daydreams. One screen, positioned correctly, with the money I saved going toward a better chair.
The chair matters more than the monitor. Nobody writes that in monitor reviews.
