I spent two years refusing to buy a portable SSD. Copying files to USB sticks, uploading to cloud storage, emailing myself links ( like an animal ). Then I grabbed a Samsung T7 on sale and now I can not imagine going back.
If you are still living without one, here is why you should stop overthinking and just get one.
The Speed Difference Is Not Subtle
USB 3.0 flash drives top out around 100 MB/s read on a good day. My T7 hits 1,000 MB/s read over USB-C. That is not a marginal improvement — it is the difference between waiting 10 minutes and waiting 40 seconds for a 50 GB backup.
I timed it. 47 GB of photos from my SD card to the SSD: 52 seconds. Same files to my old USB stick: 8 minutes and change. I am not exaggerating.
Write speeds matter too. The T7 writes at around 1,000 MB/s ( sequential ). Even with smaller random files, it stays well above 300 MB/s. My USB stick? 15 MB/s on a bad day. Random writes on flash storage are genuinely painful.
The Size Is Ridiculous
The T7 is roughly the size of a credit card. Thinner than my phone. I carry it in the same pocket as my keys and I have dropped it more times than I will admit. No moving parts means it does not care.
Compare that to an external spinning-disk drive. Those 2.5-inch HDD enclosures need their own bag, their own cable, and their own prayer that the bus ride does not kill the platters. SSD? Toss it in. Done.
Which One I Actually Use
Samsung T7 Shield, 2 TB. It was on sale for around $160. The non-Shield version is cheaper ( about $130 for 2 TB ) but the Shield has a rubber case and I am clumsy. Your call.
Other solid options:
SanDisk Extreme Pro — similar speeds, built-in USB-A loop. Good if you need both connector types.WD Black P50 — chunky but tough. 2,000 MB/s if your machine supports it.Crucial X9 Pro — small, fast, USB-C native. No bells, no whistles. Just works.Skip anything under 1 TB. The price-per-GB sweet spot right now is 2 TB. And do not bother with the 4 TB versions unless you are editing video off the drive — they are overpriced for what they are.
What I Actually Use It For
Here is what lives on mine:
Full photo backups ( RAW files from every shoot in the last 3 years )A bootable Linux install ( Ubuntu, for when I need to rescue a machine )Docker images and development environments ( saves re-downloading 15 GB of layers every time )Encrypted password vault backup ( VeraCrypt volume, 5 GB )Movies and shows for travel ( Montevideo to Rome is 13 hours, and airline WiFi is a scam )The bootable Linux partition alone is worth the price. I have rescued two laptops and one server with that thing. Plug in, boot, fix the problem, unplug. No installation media, no ISO burning, no USB dance.
Encryption Is Not Optional
Samsung includes AES 256-bit hardware encryption on the T7. You set a password, the drive locks on eject. No password, no data. It is dead simple.
If you lose the drive ( and you will, eventually ), whoever finds it gets nothing. Your photos, your documents, your passwords — all encrypted. Peace of mind for zero effort.
One warning: if you forget the password, the data is gone. No recovery. Samsung is not kidding about this. Write it down somewhere.
Cloud Is Not A Replacement
I pay for cloud storage. I also carry a portable SSD. They do different things.
Cloud syncs documents across devices. Great for small files, terrible for 50 GB of RAW photos or a 20 GB Docker image. Upload speeds in Uruguay hover around 5-10 Mbps on a good day. That is 4-5 hours for what the SSD transfers in under a minute.
And when your internet drops ( and it drops, this is Uruguay, not Seoul ), you still have everything local.

Tested with: fio on Linux 6.5, ext4, direct=1The random I/O gap is where it really matters. Booting a Linux install from the flash drive felt like 2005. From the T7? 14 seconds to a desktop.
Setting Up the Bootable Partition
