I have been traveling on a budget for years. Not because I am cheap ( well, maybe a little ), but because wasting money on travel basics is just annoying. Here are three things I do every single trip that save me real money without making the experience worse.
1. Book Flights on the Right Day ( And Time )
Tuesday afternoons. That is it. That is the hack. Airlines drop prices on Tuesday around 2-3pm because that is when competition pricing updates roll through. I have tracked this across dozens of flights and it is consistent enough to rely on.
Also, clear your cookies or use incognito. Airlines absolutely track your searches and inflate prices when they see you coming back to the same route. I switched to incognito for booking and saw price differences of 15-20% on the same flight within hours.
Google Flights is my go-to for finding routes, then I book directly with the airline. Skyscanner for inspiration when I have no idea where I want to go. Never book through a third-party aggregator unless you enjoy spending hours on hold with customer service when something goes wrong.
2. Eat Where Locals Eat, Not Where the Guidebook Tells You
This sounds obvious but most people still walk into the first restaurant they see near their hotel. In Montevideo, I eat at market stalls and neighborhood places for a third of what the tourist spots charge. The asado is better too ( and that is not even debatable ).
My rule: walk 4-5 blocks away from any landmark, find the place with zero English on the menu, and sit down. In Italy that got me the best cacio e pepe of my life for 8 euros. In Uruguay it got me a chivito that I still think about. The guidebook places charge triple for half the flavor.
3. Travel Off-Peak and Embrace the Empty
I wrote about this before ( off-season travel ), but it bears repeating because the savings are stupid. Flights in February to Punta del Este are half the price of January. Hotels drop 40-60%. The beaches are empty. The weather is still fine. You just do not get the crowds.
The same applies to European cities. Rome in November is magnificent. Half the tourists, cool air, and everything still open. I paid 45 euros for a hotel room that goes for 120 in July. The only thing you miss is the sweating.
A Few More Quick Ones
Always get a local SIM. Roaming charges are theft. In Uruguay, ANTEL prepaid gives you data for pennies. Same in Italy with TIM. Walk past the airport SIM stand and find a proper shop.
Use a no-foreign-transaction-fee card. This alone saves me 2-3% on every trip. Revolut and Wise both work fine.
Walk. Every city I have visited is walkable if you are not lazy. I save on transport, find random cool stuff, and get steps in. Win-win-win.
Conclusion
Budget travel is not about suffering. It is about not being an easy target. Book smart, eat local, travel off-peak. The rest is just showing up. :)
